Public Involvement Process
The purpose for developing a public involvement plan is to ensure consistency throughout all levels of the transportation planning process. As such, the public involvement program for the Southern Regional Assessibility Study (SRAS) will enable the general public, government agencies, businesses and other stakeholders, to receive background and technical information in order to provide meaningful input to ARC during the regional planning process.
There are six elements included in the Public Involvement Plan:
- Clearly defined purpose and objectives for initiating public dialogue on transportation planning issues;
- Specific identification of the affected public and other stakeholder groups;
- Identification of techniques for engaging the public in the transportation planning process;
- Notification procedures that target potentially affected groups;
- Education and assistance techniques that result in accurate and full public understanding of transportation and related issues; and
- Measurable actions that demonstrate federal, state, regional and local decision makers seriously consider public input.
The goals of the SRAS public involvement program include maintaining early and timely contact with the general public, government agencies, business owners, and other interested stakeholders throughout the planning process; helping elected officials understand the consequences of land use and transportation choices on the lives of residents; and raising awareness and understanding of relationship between transportation improvements, increased connectivity, transit use, and improved economic vitality, safety and quality of life.
