Residents in Gwinnett and Rockdale counties had a chance to learn more about the regional transportation Referendum through ARC’s Wireside Chats on Thursday evening. Some 4,500 people took part in the two telephone town hall meetings. The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) is hosting 12 Wireside Chats over six nights to give residents of the region a chance to learn more about projects that are part of the upcoming Regional Transportation Referendum.
Questions covered a broad range of topics, from how long the tax will last to specifics about some of the 157 projects on the referendum list. A number of Gwinnett callers had questions about Hwy. 316 improvements and improved transit services to their county. How the tax works and it’s specific economic benefits were of interest to Rockdale participants.
Polls taken during last night’s calls and the two previous evenings revealed that a substantial majority of participants, more than 90 percent, have found the Wireside Chats to be helpful in understanding the transportation referendum vote and what is at stake.
Between now and June 14, residents of the region can participate in four more Wireside Chats. The calls are organized by jurisdiction and are free of charge. The schedule for the upcoming Chats is as follows:
- June 13, 6:15 p.m. - Cherokee County
- June 13, 7:30 p.m. - DeKalb County
- June 14, 6:15 p.m. - South Fulton County
- June 14, 7:30 p.m. - Clayton County
Each chat lasts for one hour, and participants have the opportunity to ask questions directly of local officials and transportation experts. If a question is not answered during the call, the caller may request to receive a response via e-mail following the call.
Participants who register in advance at www.metroatlantatransportationvote.com will receive a map they can use to view the locations of projects discussed on the call. Those who do not register can still take part in the chats by calling 1-877-229-8493 and entering 19878# when asked for the passcode. All maps are on the website.
