(ATLANTA - April 19, 2007)

Who: The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), the official planning agency for the 10-county Atlanta region.

What: For 60 years, ARC and its predecessor agencies have worked to plan and lead efforts to insure a green and sustainable Atlanta region through the promotion of sustainable land use and community design practices, encouraging water conservation and protecting the Chattahoochee River and smaller streams, improving air quality, providing commuting options and planning for more greenspace and parks.

In conjunction with Earth Day, ARC created a new Web resource so residents across the region can easily find out how to support green efforts. “Growing a Greener Region” details ARC’s efforts at making the region greener as well as shows how local governments are also contributing.

Since the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, the annual event has provided a way to celebrate the earth and promote a safer, healthier and cleaner world. Former Wisconsin Sen. Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day as a way to make environmental protection a national issue.
