1,200 Expected at 21st Annual Mayors' Walk for Adults 50+

What: 21st Annual Mayors’ Walk
Mayors from the 10-county Atlanta region will join more than 1,200 adults age 50 and older for one-mile and 5K competitive walks to promote health and fitness for mid-life and older residents of the Atlanta region. Participants will compete in men’s and women’s division by age group – 50 to 59, 60 to 69 and 70 and older. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each group.
Who: Mayor Clark Boddie of Palmetto is the host mayor for this year’s walk. Also scheduled to attend are Mayor Lorene Lindsey of Locust Grove, Mayor Mickey Thompson of Douglasville and Mayor R. W. Coley of Hampton. Jovita Moore, anchor for WSB-TV Channel 2, will be the mistress of ceremonies.
The Mayors’ Walk is organized by the Atlanta Regional Commission in cooperation with Georgia Striders. Sponsors include Pfizer, Care Improvement Plus, UPS, WSB-TV Channel 2, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Canterbury Press, Inc. and the Thanks Mom & Dad Fund®.
When: Tuesday, May 1, 2007, 10 a.m. – 1: 30 p.m.
Where: Grant Park, Atlanta
Why: There is growing evidence that regular physical activity reduces the risk of dying prematurely, as well as the risk of high blood pressure, colon cancer and diabetes. There are also escalating health consequences associated with inactivity among older Americans. For more than 20 years, the Mayors’ Walk has sought to encourage metro Atlantans 50 and older to remain fit through exercise.
