Rockdale

In 1870, Rockdale was created out of Henry and Newton counties and pieces of Walton, Gwinnett and DeKalb counties. It was named after Rockdale Baptist Church, which itself was named after the granite layer sitting beneath the red clay soil. According to 2005 Census estimates, it is the 28th most populous county in Georgia and the least populous one in the 10-county region. At 131 square miles, Rockdale is the second smallest county (out of 159) in the state, larger only than Athens-Clarke.
