Leading the Way to Cleaner Streams

Last modified Monday, July 07, 2008 9:09

Many streams in Georgia are not meeting state water quality standards. To help local governments clean up Map showing water basins in metro Atlanta including the Coosa River Basin, Chattahoochee River Basin, Ocmulgee River Basin and the Flint River Basinthese streams, Georgia's Environmental Protection Division (GA EPD) has studied the maximum amount of pollution a stream can receive and still meet water quality standards. These limits are called Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs).

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) helps local governments to develop plans to meet these water quality standards. For more information on the TMDL process please visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Web site.

Final Georgia 2002 305(b)/303(d) List Documents
The Georgia 2002 305(b)/303(d) list of waters was prepared by GA EPD as a part of the Georgia 2000-2001 assessment of water quality prepared in accordance with Sections 305(b) and 303(d) of the Federal Clean Water Act and guidance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Assessed waterbodies are classified as supporting, partially supporting, or not supporting designated water uses according to a comparison of water quality monitoring results to water quality standards and other pertinent information. This list is updated every two years and currently the 2002 list is the most current available.
