The Community Planning Academy (CPA) offers high-quality and cost effective training and workshops to appointed citizen planners, local elected officials and local government employees. CPA provides planners and decision makers with tools to make effective decisions regarding their community's future.

ArcGIS Desktop II

Wednesday, July 15 - Friday, July 17 | 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Location: ARC Offices, 3rd floor, Downtown Atlanta

Objective: The objective of ArcGIS Desktop II is to build on the skills gained in Desktop I to help participants perform complex functions within ArcGIS. This three-day course is taught by an ESRI-authorized instructor and will create a framework for becoming a successful ArcGIS Desktop user. There are only 12 spots in this class. Spaces are available to local government and school district employees only on a first come, first served basis.

Cost: $340 and includes breakfast, lunch and all workshop materials.

How to Stay Above Board:
Legal Concepts and Implications of Planning and Redevelopment

Date: Wednesday, August 19 | 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Location: College Park Public Safety Training Facility | 3717 College Street, College Park

Objective: From the legal relationship between the zoning ordinance and comprehensive plan to the benefits of creating a tax allocation district, elected and appointed officials as well as planning and economic development staff can benefit from the experience of local attorneys who have specific knowledge of these tools and issues and how to navigate them successfully.

The objective of this course is to transmit an understanding of the basics of key legal concepts related to planning and redevelopment.  Participants will come away with a clearer view of tools they might use to facilitate and spur redevelopment in their communities.

Cost: $50 and includes breakfast, lunch and all workshop materials.

ArcGIS Desktop I

Dates: Wednesday, September 2-Thursday, September 3 | 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Location: ARC Offices, 3rd floor, Downtown Atlanta

Objective: The objective of ArcGIS Desktop I is to provide planning officials and staff with a basic introduction to GIS. This course will also take the participant through facilitated exercises to help familiarize them with the capabilities of this planning tool. There are only 12 spots in this class. Spaces are available to local government and school district employees only on a first come, first served basis.

Training for Planning Officials

ARC 10 county regionDates: September 16, October 14 & November 18 | 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
Location: Clarkston Community Center, Angora Hall | 3701 College Avenue, Clarkston

Objective: The flagship course of the Community Planning Academy, this course is targeted at local government elected and appointed officials and citizen planners.  In these three days, participants will gain a thorough understanding of issues that should be considered when planning in the Atlanta region.  From water resource planning to land use and transportation, this course offers valuable information from some of the region's experts.  Don't miss this class!

Waiting out the Storm: Addressing Planning & Development Issues of the Current Economy

Date: Thursday, November 5 | 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Objective: Throughout the past year, local governments have been dealing with decreased tax revenues, foreclosed homes and neighborhoods, budget cuts and staff reductions. These issues are driving conversations about how cities and counties in the region will survive the downturn and emerge with policies and plans in place to stabilize local economies. This workshop will provide updates on key issues and ideas on how to move forward.

Understanding Access Management

Date: Thursday, December 10 | 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Objective: Access management is the systematic control of the location, spacing, design, and operation of driveways, median openings, interchanges, and street connections to a roadway.  This workshop will take a look at how local governments can integrate access management into their existing plans, create safer roadways for all users and facilitate economic growth and development.

Training Catered to Your Needs

ARC will conduct training on topics that best suit your community's needs. ARC staff has conducted a variety of different one-day workshops on topics including "Planning for Large Scale Retail," "Impact Fee Planning," "Downtown and Activity Center Economic Development," "Financing Your Plan," and "Linking Water Resource and Land Use Planning."
