Bike Suitability Maps

In 2003, ARC produced bicycle suitability maps to assist the cycling community in determining the safest and most logical path. Maps were produced for all counties (including separate ones for North and South Fulton counties) and the City of Atlanta. The maps evaluate several factors to develop a suitability rating for thousands of routes throughout the region. These criteria include traffic counts, outside lane and shoulder widths, and the amount of truck traffic, and others. Green represents the best riding conditions, orange for medium cycling conditions, and red for the most difficult conditions.
The maps also identify existing on-road bicycle facilities, off-road paths, transit stations, bus routes, and various points-of-interest like schools, libraries, historic centers, and the like. Through their innovative use of GIS technology, these maps were showcased in ESRI’s 2003 Map Book, which highlights creative examples of GIS uses from around the world.
