Regional Housing Forum Tackles Southside Issues
(ATLANTA - May 28, 2008)
Southside mayors, county commissioners and planning officials will join housing industry experts for the quarterly Atlanta Regional Housing Forum, “Housing Challenges on the Southside,” on June 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the National Archives Southeast Facility, 5780 Jonesboro Road, Morrow, Ga.
“There does not appear to be a slowing of the home foreclosure crisis that has affected thousands of metro Atlantans,” said ARC Land Use Planning Division Chief Dan Reuter. “Housing construction has yet to rebound and that may not occur for months.”
Some of the hardest hit foreclosure areas in metro Atlanta are communities in the region south of I-20, in sections of Clayton, DeKalb, Fayette, Fulton and Henry counties. For the first time, the Atlanta Regional Housing Forum will host its quarterly meeting on location in one of the many communities being affected by the foreclosure crisis.
The forum will cover the current state of permitting and foreclosures in southside communities and will include presentations by Chris Burke, vice president of government affairs, Greater Atlanta Homebuilders Association; Tim Young, Locust Grove planning director; Eugene James, director of Metrostudy, Atlanta region; and Marshall Walker, assistant director of planning and zoning, Rockdale County.
The forum will also feature an in-depth conversation on the primary housing challenges for local governments, with Clayton County Chairman Eldrin Bell, Henry County Chairman Jason Harper, Fayetteville Mayor Kenneth Steele and Henry Council for Quality Growth Executive Director Steve Cash.
The Atlanta Regional Housing Forum is coordinated by the Atlanta Regional Commission and co-sponsored by nearly a dozen organizations in the Atlanta region concerned with providing a wide range of affordable housing choices. There is no cost to attend. For more information about attending, please contact Le’Var Rice at 404-463-3284 and visit www.atlantaregional.com.
