Cherokee County was formed in 1830 from Cherokee Indian lands and was later divided into 24 additional counties. According to 2008 Census estimates, it is the seventh most populous county in Georgia and is the sixth most populous in the 10-county Atlanta region. At 424 square miles, Cherokee ranks 51st (out of 159) in the state in area and is the third largest county in the 10-county region.
